Mulan

A review by Pamela Garza

This is another one of Disney's films that will end up in the vault of classics. MULAN is an Asian tale about a girl, who feels she can't go anything right. When her disabled father is called to war, she takes his armor and impersonates a soldier in order to save his life.

Her ancestors want to send someone to bring her back, but are tricked by Mushu, who is a demoted guardian of the family in the guise of a tiny dragon. He helps her join the army instead.

The animation is without flaw. Watch the facial expressions of all characters. Listen to the stirring music, particularly "I'll Make a Man Out of You", sung by Donny Osmond. The score carries you through Mulan's training, and will bring triumphant tears to your eyes everytime.

Remember the subject here is war. The Huns cross the Great Wall of China, and move closer to attack the Imperial City. But it's also a story of honor, accepting who you are, and learning that fathers have done that from the very beginning.

Parents can enjoy this with the kids because of the humor of its characters, the music, and familiarity with the voices. (Miguel Ferrar, B. D. Wong, George Takei, Pat Morita, and Eddie Murphy)
